Safety Challenges in Manufacturing
In 2019, there were 421,400 nonfatal injuries and illnesses in the American manufacturing industry, or 2.6 cases per 100 full-time employees. When it comes to injuries involving days away from work, there were 90.7 cases per 10,000 employees. Some of these injuries included:
- Sprains, strains and tears: 25.4 cases per 10,000 employees
- Cuts and lacerations: 10.5 cases per 10,000 employees
- Amputations: 2.2 cases per 10,000 employees
Working with hazardous equipment and materials, workers are exposed to some of the leading causes of workplace accidents and fatalities, such as slips, trips and falls, injuries from lifting/handling, or injuries from being struck by an object or machinery.
Additionally, there are other factors that can increase the risk of the sector – particularly for lone workers. For instance, long hours, loud workspaces and low-visibility can make supervision and emergency response difficult.
One option we have to help address the top safety issue of slips, trips and falls is our Belle X wearable as part of our SafetyAware solution. This lightweight device offers check-in, fall detection, and SOS in the event of an emergency.
