How Crescent Point Energy keeps workers connected and safe

Problem:

Crescent Point Energy is one of Canada’s largest light and medium oil producers, with resources in the Williston Basin, Southwest Saskatchewan and the Uinta Basin in Utah. In 2016 alone, the company grew its drilling inventory by approximately 1,000 net locations. Managing such an operation requires hundreds of people who often work alone.

Before meeting Aware360, health and safety advisors at Crescent Point had little visibility into lone employees’ safety. Each worker was required to check in by phone in the morning and at the end of the day, but monitoring during the shift itself was informal and irregular. Most importantly, if someone missed a check-in, supervisors had no insight into why, or even where the worker was.

“We were concerned that if someone was in a vehicle accident, we might not know for hours,” says Lorinda Jacobson, HSE Coordinator at Crescent Point. “Now, if an accident were to occur, we would find out.”

Crescent Point had approximately 650 employees in the U.S. and Canada were identified as being at-risk, including operations personnel who check wells or work in gas plants, maintenance personnel, engineers and environmental workers.

Action:

For at-risk workers in the field, Crescent Point deployed SafetyLink, an early version of Aware360’s SafetyAware product. The app-based system uses smart phones and satellite devices, along with web-based monitoring, to support lone workers.

For supervisors, SafetyAware complies with legislation and provides 24/7/365 live response services to help workers in emergencies.

SafetyAware supports lone-worker safety legislation while keeping workers and managers productive. If an employee fails to check in, the system automatically shows any hazard or other alerts the employee used, as well as their last-known location.

Result:

The monitoring solution provides insight into the area, including other workers there.

“If we have a grass fire or emergency,” says Lorinda, “We can identify the area and the other people within it. If someone’s injured, we can see who else is closest in the field. We can use employees as resources to help each other, and let them know the situation to make sure they can evacuate safely.”

Crescent Point is committed to safety. The company’s use of SafetyAware provides more value for their dollar than their old monitoring solution, and helps to empower their people to look after themselves – and each other. Supervisors and health-and-safety advisors can face potential emergencies with more insight, as well as assess overall safety with reporting that summarizes activity and usage.

Solution in Action:

The SafetyAware system is always on, and Crescent Point encourages their employees to use the app whenever they might be at risk, even if they’re not working. In fact, the app recently saved the lives of employees and their families when they were not even on the job. It came to the aid of two people on vacation and two more trapped in a wildfire while working. Crescent Point doesn’t just encourage their people to take charge and stay safe—it helps them do it every day. Read the article
